Set in ancient China, the film follows a bandit leader who abducts the mayor’s daughter from a village left in ruins by his accomplices. Though initially held hostage and mistreated, she gradually develops a complex love-hate relationship with one of the outlaws.
While his contemporaries in Taiwan’s New Cinema movement turned their focus to rural realism, director Wang Toontook a different path—plunging into the turmoil of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms era. Run Away reinvents the Wuxia costume drama, shifting the emphasis from action choreography to psychological realism. With meticulous production design and an unflinching exploration of moral ambiguity, the film captures both the tragic heroism of the outlaws and a poignant critique of a turbulent world.
For the 2024 digital restoration of Run Away, we have redesigned the key visuals to evoke the film’s chaotic historical backdrop and the sense of tragic grandeur at its core.
