TFAI The River by Tsai Ming Liang 1997

The River, Tsai Ming-liang’s third feature film, was released in 1997 and follows Xiao-kang, who unexpectedly reunites with an old friend and ends up playing a corpse in a movie. Soon after, he develops a mysterious neck ailment that no treatment can cure. His family is deeply fractured—his mother is having an affair, while his father frequents gay saunas. They live under the same roof but exist as strangers. For the film’s digital restoration, I redesigned the teaser and main posters, incorporating a water-stained title treatment to evoke both the river’s presence and the damp, heavy atmosphere of the sauna scenes.
