"The Wedding Banquet" (囍宴) is a 1993 drama exploring family and social themes. The story follows a gay Taiwanese man living in the United States who, to put his parents' minds at ease, marries a female painter from Shanghai who is living in the country illegally, granting her a green card in exchange. However, the plan starts to unravel after his parents fly to the U.S. to arrange the wedding for him.
The film was directed by the renowned filmmaker Ang Lee, and it was the work that first established him on the international film stage.
